Gearknobs

Your standard gear knob or gear shifter will often be a horrible plastic item and in most cases not very nice to hold or change gear with. An aftermarket gear knob is mainly for looks but can provide a more enjoyable drive and confidence while shifting with the right choice, and again these are available in all kinds of styles and colours, so there is something out there for everyone . Usually these are universal just watch out for specific versions if you have a lift up reverse gear-box.

How to change your gear knob

This is the Modified Enthusiasts guide to how to fit a aftermarket gear knob to your car, thanks to Phil H for submitting this guide to us.

How to change you gearknob to a aftermarket one

Step 1

Firstly make sure you have all that you need, check the instructions for your gear knob to ensure there is nothing missing. Theres nothing like getting half way through fitting it to find out you dont have the screws to fix it or something.

Make sure you have everything you need to fit your gear knob

Step 2

Right now we have everything that we need, start by removing your standard gear knob, as for how to remove it depends solely on what car you have some twist, some pull others have to be cut off, on my peugeot 206 i had to pull very hard being carefull to not smack myself in the mouth.

Step 3

Depending on the car but some gear knobs can be attached to the gaitor, be careful not to damage the clips that hold this in place, when removing the gator from the gear knob. On my peugeot 206 i found that once turning the gator inside out there was a cable tie holding the gear gator to the gear knob, remove this and the gear knob will come detatched from the gator. You can now disgard your old gear knob, but keep your gator, you will need this later.

Step 4

You can now re-attach the gear gator. Get the lower sleeve of the gear knob, this is the lower part of the gear knob that is usually screwed onto the bottom of the gear knob. Slide this down the gear stick.

re-attach the gear gator, and fit the lower part of the gear knob

Step 5

Now grab the gear knob, and the small grub screws supplyed. Screw these partially in however ensure your not blocking the shaft from getting in. You can fit these screws later but i found it easier to fit them first to save you messing about getting them in when the gear knob is being fixed.

Now grab the gear knob, and the small grub screws supplyed

Step 6

Now slide the gear knob down the shaft and tighten up the grub screws. Ensure that if there are any logos etc that they are facing the right way. Then screw on the lower sleeve to the gear knob make sure its all attached secure.

Now slide the gear knob down the shaft and tighten up the grub screws

Step 7

Dont worry, were nearly finished now. All thats left is to re attach the gear gator to the gear knob using a cable tie on the inside just to finish off the overall look.

Step 8

Thats it, just double check that it is attached securely as you dont want it coming of in your hand while driving.
