"Have you all heard about proposals for police being given powers to issue on the spot fines? Just wondering what other people's opinions of this were? Personally I find it pretty worrying; its not the sort of thing that can be left to opinion and I am certain that some police will abuse this power if granted. "

"This has been in force for some time now hasnt it? and agreed some police may abuse this power however surely wont they prefere to not have the paperwork. I got caught speeding on the A1 a few weeks back and im not going to lie i was late and yes i was giving the liner abit of grief. Got caught doing 95mph (sounds like i must have braked well in time ) but he just gave me a very deep telling off the officer said how i could kill someone and how would i feel if someone died as a result of my speeding. After an intense 30mins maybe more in the back of a T5 being grilled by both the officers they let me go on my way. I was worryed i may have lost my licence or had a big fine but they were really nice policemen to be honest. I definatly learnt my lesson that day i must say though. Its not really worth the risk on the roads thats for sure."

Sounds like you were lucky that time! This goes to show the human element in the police force which i suppose goes back to my original point while these police officers were satisfied you had learned your lesson who knows what some less understanding ones may have done in the situation. While in this case too it was obvious you were breaking the law and if anything probably should have been given a fine (sorry) there could be other discrepancies where people actually are not breaking the law but it has come down to the individual officers own perception of the situation. And i think we all agree that perception/opinion can vary from person to person it really is not a fair or accurate way of dealing with things!
