Good morning,

I have a question and was wondering if someone could give me some advice, or a steer in the right direction. I have a MK III Escort Cabriolet, which I will completely take apart and rebuild shortly. I have been offered a MK V RS 2000 engine, gearbox, loom etc that I have been told will fit in the car with some slight modifications i.e. engine mounts etc.

My question is, I could go down the tried and tested route of an RS Turbo engine or go down the MK V route which in theory would give me more reliability and also options. Has anyone installed one of these engines in a MK III Escort and if so, what was required and how hard was it?

Finally, I have been told to go down the installation of a ST170 engine for instance is a complete pain - is this correct, or is it a better option?

Many thanks,

John

as with all mods i guess it all depends on what you want from this? also do you have the tools knowledge an patients to do an engine swap?

I'm not too clued up on the ford engines however I do know that the rs turbo engines are very tuneable and there for parts for this will be easier to source, however these are becoming old engines now and might not be overly practical.

the st170 I believe would be a snug fit as I know this is quite a large engine. I imagine that this would be a costly job
also for parts.

personally if you can get the rs2000 engine box and loom I would go for that route.

keep us posted on how you get on

what sort of power are you after??
How handy are you with the tools??
anything is achievable if you willing to give it ago.

Both,

Thank you for coming back to me and sorry for the delay in responding.

I would like to have say 200bhp or maybe a bit more. Enough to put a grin on my face and surprise a few people, but not enough to warrant selling the house, to complete or maintain the build.

I know the RS Turbo engine is the ideal route due to size, availability, tuning parts etc, but as you have said, it is a case of the engine now becoming older, which is obviously not going to change. On the basis that the MK V engine fits, it was a case of knowing what needs to be faricated/atered/replaced or changed to make the system work well.

I am not too bad with the tools and could call on people if needed, but need to the 'Starter for 10' as they say, so that I do not go off on a tangent

Many thanks again,

John

well I would say your starter for ten would be...

1. compare engine mounts if they will line up if not what brackets are needed to fit etc.
2. what wiring will you need, will the loom connect straight to your current setup.
3. gearbox and running gear
4. ecu would be required also and how would this match up pin wise to your new install.

that's what I would start with it may be good to check out a ford owners club, and google for similar engine conversions. There are plenty of how to guides out there im sure that would help.

2.0l zetec blacktop with 2.0l gearbox 130bhp standard fit a t3 and manifold from an escort rs turbo and you will be good on stock internals for 240-250 cheap on ebay

£250-£400 engine and box
t3 and mani £100+ dependant on condition
£200-£300 get ofab engine management from a fiesta tuebo

Then all depends if u rebuild everything for price to go up and UP
