Gear Knobs

Your standard gear knob or gear shifter will often be a made of plastic and in most cases will not be very nice to hold or change gear with. Fitting an aftermarket gear knob will mainly improve the look of your gear knob, but can also provide a more enjoyable drive. Choosing the right gear knob will increase your confidence while shifting gears. Gear knobs are available in all kinds of styles and colours, so there is something out there for everyone. Usually these are universal. Just watch out for specific versions if you have a lift up reverse gear-box.

How To Change Your Gear Knob

Firstly make sure you have all that you need. Check the instructions for your new gear knob to ensure there is nothing missing. There is nothing like getting half way through fitting it to find out you don't have the screws to fix it or something.

Removing Your Standard Gear Knob

Right now we have everything that we need, start by removing your standard gear knob. As for how to remove it depends solely on what car you have. Some twist, some pull, others have to be cut off. On my Peugeot 206 I had to pull very hard being careful not smack myself in the mouth.

Detaching The Gear Knob From The Gaitor

Depending on the car, some gear knobs can be attached to the gaitor. Be careful not to damage the clips that hold this in place when removing the gaitor from the gear knob. On my Peugeot 206 I found that once turning the gaitor inside out there was a cable holding the gear gaitor to the gear knob. Remove this and the gear knob will come detached from the gaitor. You can now discard your old gear knob, but keep your gaitor, you will need this later.

Reattaching The Gear Gaitor

You can now re-attach the gear gaitor. Get the lower sleeve of the gear knob, this is the lower part of the gear knob that is usually screwed onto the bottom of the gear knob. Slide this down the gear stick

Now grab the gear knob, and the small grub screws supplied. Screw these partially in ensuring you're not blocking the shaft from getting in. You can fit these screws later but I found it easier to fit them first to save you messing about getting them in when the gear knob is being fixed.

Now slide the gear knob down the shaft and tighten up the grub screws. Ensure that if there are any logos etc are facing the right way. Then screw on the lower sleeve to the gear knob make sure its all attached secure.

Don't worry, were nearly finished now. All thats left is to re attach the gear gator to the gear knob using a cable tie on the inside just to finish off the overall look.

Thats it, just double check that it is attached securely as you don't want it coming of in your hand while driving.
