Exhausts

Most standard exhausts systems are comprised of a cast iron manifold, followed by a mild steel downpipe, catalytic converter (modern petrol cars), centre pipe and finally a rear can.

Replacing Your Standard Exhaust

When replacing your standard exhaust with an aftermarket exhaust you have different options to choose from. Most people just replace the rear can, or fit a cat back system, as this is the cheaper option. Full systems are available, but at a much greater cost (expect to pay at least 300+ for one of these). Custom systems are also available where you can choose everything from tail pipe design to the exact exhaust note that you want. Mild steel and stainless steel versions are available in most exhaust systems.

Choosing Your New Exhaust

When choosing which exhaust to use its just down to personal choice. Mild steel ones are cheaper but will not last as long or be as strong as a stainless system. Most companies will offer a car specific exhaust for each model and will offer a few different tail pipe designs. The choice of tail pipes are often quite limited especially on lower model cars.

The Benefits Of Aftermarket Exhausts

Fitting an aftermarket exhaust will always give your car a louder, much sportier sound, but as for power gains its normally disputable.
To get the most out of your exhaust, its best to pair it with a decent air filter kit and an ECU re-map.
