Alfa Romeo 164

Car Reviews » Alfa Romeo » 164

The Alfa Romeo 164 was produced between 1988 to 1997 and is an executive car, designed with a saloon body. However, the car had to be renamed before it was launched in China and Malaysia. In these countries, the number 164 has the negative connotation 'all the way to death.' The 164 was renamed Alfa Romeo 168. The number 168 has the more positive connotation of 'all the way to prosperity.' The 164 was originally launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1987. This car was the first large front wheel drive to be launched by Alfa. However, some people feared that this would lose the Alfa Romeo character found in earlier Alfa Romeo models. This was found not to be the case.

The body build quality of the 164 was greatly improved compared to other Alfa Romeo models. The 164 was the first Alfa Romeo model to use galvanised steel in its frame and panels. This reduced the chance of rust occurring in the 164. The 164 shares some styling design ideas with Ferrari. The external design of the 164 features characteristics first seen in the Ferrari Testarossa. These characteristics include the wedge profile. This wedge runs down the side of the car and makes this model look unique. The interior is comfortable, with plenty of room in both the front and the back. The car also includes several gadgets which would have appeared hi tech at the time of release.
