The Alfa Romeo 8 was presented as a concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003. The number 8 refers to the models 8 cylinder engine. The Alfa Romeo 8 concept car was know as 8C Competizione, which when translated in to English means competition. The styling of the Competizione was meant to mirror the designs of the Alfa Romeos from the 1950s and 1960s. In 2007 the Alfa Romeo was released on general sale, however, only 500 of these cars were produced. The production car was very similar to the concept car, except for the design of the rear hinged hood.
Alfa Romeo paid particular attention to the safety of this model. The brakes have been known to be superb with a stopping distance of 32 metres when travelling at 60mph.
