In 2005, Audi announced that they would produce a mid engine road car named after the Audi R8 racecar and would be launched in 2007. The R8 was officially launched at the Paris Auto Show in September 2006.

The designers of the Audi R8 have made a feature from the cooling vents. The vents have been placed under the front and rear headlights. The R8 is not a very large car compared to its rivals, however, it is a lot wider and lower. The extra height and width does not add to the practicality of this model. The nose boot is not very spacious and there is limited rear visibility. Many features are not as standard as you have to pay extra for certain features. The dashboard wraps around the driver that adds to the driving experience. The R8 has a distinctive looking curved bar of LED daytime running lights that are mounted in the xenon headlights.

Safety features include ABS, electronic brake force distribution, an electronic stability programme and anti-slip regulation. Large composite brake discs are stud mounted to the wheel hubs. This improves the heat dissipation. Front and side curtain airbags are fitted as standard. The Quattro all wheel drive aids traction when driving in difficult road conditions.
