The Ferrari F40 was produced from 1987 to 1992 and is a mid engined, four wheel drive, two door sports Coupe. The F40 was released as the successor to the 288 GTO, and was designed as competition to the Porshe 959. Between the years of 1987 to 1989, the F40 held the title of the worlds fastest street legal production car. During the years of production, the F40 was Ferraris most powerful and expensive car. The car was one of the few cars at the time that did not include traction control and also one of the few cars to utilise turbochargers.

Pininfarina left behind the designs they had used on previous Ferraris. The F40 featured panels that were made of kelvar, carbon fibre and aluminium. These materials increased the strength of the model and also reduced the weight of the vehicle. The weight of the car was kept low by the model having plastic windshield and windows, no carpets and no door handles. Doors could be opened by a release latch. To improve the aerodynamics of the F40, the frontal area was reduced and designed with a low smooth nose.

Ferrari wanted to design a car that was street legal, but could also be taken onto the track and raced at high speeds. Therefore, a number of features you would expect to find in other models were not included in the F40. The carbon door sills and floor were left unfinished and no space was left for a sound system. The interior is crammed and the driving position is somewhat uncomfortable. It is difficult to get in and out of the vehicle. However, this can only be expected with this type of car.
