Known as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co,Ltd Mazda was first founded in Japan in the 1920s and was known for manufacturing machine tools. It wasn't until 1927 that the company began manufacturing cars, under the
new company name of Toyo Kogyo Co. Ltd. The company finally adopted the name Mazda in 1984. Mazda saw dramatic success with its invention of the Wankel Rotary engine which the company began to produce
in the early 1960s. This set the company apart from rival Japanese companies. Other companies have tried to reproduce this type of engine, but have failed, leaving Mazda as the sole trader. Gaining
attention with their attempts to evolve engine designs allowed Mazda to begin exporting their designs around the world. The company saw success in America until 1973 when America suffered an oil
crisis. Sales of cars with The Wankel Rotary engine began to fall due to the engines high consumption of fuel. Mazda turned its attention to pistol fuelled engines and only used the Wankel Rotary
engines in their more sportier models.
