Mitsubishi was formed in the 1970s and is part of the largest industrial group based in Japan. Being part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industry has made Mitsubishi the fifth largest car manufacturer in Japan.
Mitsubishi is known for forming strong alliances with its foreign competitors, such as the Hyundai Motor company in Korea. These alliances have been known to benefit Mitsubishi dramatically. In the
1970's - 1980s the alliances increased sales from 250,000 to 1.5 million. However, Mitsubishi's alliance with south east Asia had a detrimental impact on the success of the company.The 1997 East
Asian financial crisis has left Mitsubishi struggling to maintain the success of the 1970s - 1980s.
