Daihatsu Copen

The Daihatsu Copen debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1999 and is a 2 door roadster, with an aluminium retractable roof. The Copen was first released with a 660 cc turbo charged engine, however, this type of engine no longer meets emission standards in several countries, so the Copen is now fitted with a more powerful 1.3 L engine.

The exterior of the Copen draws a lot of attention. It is petite and the styling is slightly retro. The metal folding roof is unusual for such a small car. It would be expected that it would have been fitted with a material roof. The metal roof insulates the car more effectively than a material roof and reduces the amount of noise in the car. However, the car is still noisy on motorways and at high speeds.

The interior is quite spacious when the roof is down, but when the roof is up the cabin does feel cramped. There is limited elbow room so it can get a little uncomfortable for the driver. The seats in the Copen do make the car a little bit more comfortable, even on long journeys. The seats are figure hugging and hold the driver and passengers comfortably.
